Founded in 1825 by brothers, Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, the Talisker distillery was initially a flop. In 1880 its fortunes changed when Roderick Kemp and Alexander Allen purchased the distillery and drove it into a success, eventually to be purchased by Diageo. Fast forward to 1998 when Talisker was promoted to a founding member of the Classic Malts Selection of Diageo, upping the offerings to 57 orth, Storm, Dark Storm, and Port Ruighe.
